In Puerto Lempira, the remote area of Honduras where we live and work, most students have no realistic opportunity or expectation to finish school past the 6th grade. For those who finish elementary, the option for poor students is an under-funded, over-crowded school that is a haven for illegal drug activity. The only consistent, full-time option is private high school which is available only to the wealthy.
It is an extremely rare thing for a poor student to be able to achieve a high school diploma. University is almost unheard of for Miskito children.
Reach Out Honduras, Inc. has a sponsorship program which allows families and individuals from the US to partner with worthy students who desire to complete their high school education, but cannot financially afford to do so. Praise God that He provided sponsors for 6 high school students for the 2011 Honduran school year.
For 2012, we seek sponsors for a few special students for high school and college/medical school.
Additionally, we are currently identifying students to send to Copan to a Christian boarding school. With this in mind, we are excited to offer you the opportunity to support specific young people in their pursuit of secondary education.
Sponsorships are for a minimum of one year. Sponsors will be able to communicate to their sponsored young person via e-mail through the Waits family who live and work as missionaries in Puerto Lempira.
Additionally, we are starting an Education Fund which will be available to meet the needs of the young persons who do not have sponsors. Please consider donating any amount to this fund which will be distributed as the Reach Out Honduras Board allocates based on need, past work in school and future commitment to education.”
Long-Term Future Vision is a Reach Out Honduras Christian, bilingual school right here in Puerto Lempira. Pray with us as God unfolds His direction to the Board of Reach Out Honduras and to donors who will partner to make this vision a reality.
